Hi, I’m Balaram. What keeps me interested in tech is the joy involved in understanding how things actually work. I like building intuition around a concept, not just knowing the formula or the API. If there is a mathematical idea behind a system, I usually want to know where it shows up in the real world, what problem it is solving, and why that particular formulation makes sense there. I tend to keep digging until the abstract idea connects to something concrete.

I also like understanding things for myself. AI makes it increasingly easy to delegate the difficult parts of technical work, including writing, exploring a problem, and even articulating what you think. I use these tools a lot, but I try to stay conscious of what I am handing over. Sitting with something I do not understand yet, asking bad questions, explaining it badly, trying again, and following an idea until it starts making sense are all part of how I learn.

That carries into how I work. I care about judgment and being able to make practical decisions when there is no obviously correct answer. I care about communicating clearly, especially when an idea is still vague and has not yet turned into a concrete system. And I tend to enjoy problems that are not neatly posed in the first place, where part of the work is figuring out what the real problem is, what matters, what is worth trying, and how to turn that into something useful.

Those are usually the problems I find most interesting, especially at the edge of research and engineering. I’m also building the muscle for it at my day to day work.
